About the Department:
Curiosity is typically the starting point for philosophy, and Department of Philosophy, Chanchal College strives to develop such curiosity with care, discipline, and a strong feeling of solidarity. If, as faculty, we were to lay out our department's ethos in a few words, we would say thoughtful, encouraging, supportive, and vibrant. This department began its journey with the establishment of Chanchal College on 26 August 1969. Initially, the department was affiliated with the University of North Bengal, but since 2008 it has been affiliated with the University of Gour Banga. Since the founding, this department has been led by highly qualified faculty members who, while not well-known, have been distinguished in their respective fields. Presently, the department is facilitated by a specialized faculty team whose primary goal is to assist students in becoming 'human' first. We believe that studying philosophy is the most effective approach to building values, critical thinking, and deep understanding.
The Department of Philosophy, Chanchal College now offers a 3-year UG degree and a 4-year UG degree (Honours / Honours with Research) in accordance with the NEP-2020 curriculum, which has been formulated and authorized by the concerned Board of Studies under the jurisdiction of the University of Gour Banga. Through this programme, the department offers a wide range of Major, Minor, and Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC) covering various branches of philosophy, including Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Logic, Ethics, Applied Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Psychology, Contemporary Indian Thought, Philosophy of Religion, Feminist Philosophy and recent trends in Western Epistemology and Metaphysics. Through this programme, the department also offers Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) and IAPC/ IAPWC Courses for students.
The department not only engages in cultural activities and sports, but it also provides a supportive learning environment with accessible faculty, diverse philosophical traditions, and strong academic programs that encourage thoughtful discussion and critical inquiry. At present, the total number of seats is not filled, but is adequate according to the teacher-student ratio. Simply, our department’s strength lies in its ideal size—neither too large nor too small. This balanced environment allows for close interaction between students and faculty while still offering a rich diversity of ideas and perspectives. Many of our graduates have secured successful positions in various fields. We are happy to serve the Philosophy department of this well-known institution.
